Self-evaluation

During my studies of course of "University pedagogics" (25 ECTS) in 2013-2014, I found my inner teachership and understood how important it is to recognize yourself as teacher. I could say that this was very eye-opening experience. As I traveled further into my inner teachership, I realized how little I understood about being a teacher. This was my main motivation to ever start to study at Vocational Teacher School of Häme University of Applied Sciences.

As I realized what is my inner teachership, I started to pay a lot of attention to reflect my work as a teacher but also to reflect how my students experience their learning. For my point of view, most valuable evaluation of being a good teacher is that student also evaluated his/her learning to be successful and that learning has happened in inspiring and supportive atmosphere.

I observe also myself as teacher based on my own experience what is good teacher. One of largest understanding for me in my trip to my inner teachership has been, that my idea of good teacher also consists of my own opinion of good teacher. Motivation and inspiration against topic I teach is very important for me. The more I like topic, the better I feel myself “dive into topic” an "be part of that". I also wish that my own enthusiasm towards topic I teach can also be transferred to students.

I try to be objective teacher for all students, but unfortunately the abilities to handle all students of various types and cultures makes it very difficult and I do not always manage to do my best as teacher. But in all these cases, I think that constructive feedback both from side of student and side of teacher and open communication in reliable atmosphere solves most of the problems.

As I am advising/supervising master theses and advising doctoral theses, I try to find time almost from nowhere. I think that advising/supervising processes are such demanding processes that students need very close contact to supervisors/advisors and have possibility to discuss and ask whatever they have in their minds. I have most succesful experiences in in my advising/supervising career as I have seen students grow from students´status towards expertise of their field. This gives me most in advising/supervising!

My self-evaluation as a teacher and my own experience in developing to be better teacher can be seen from my learning diary blog:
