Theory of learning and my teaching philosophy

My philosophy of education is based on the humanistic education and on life-long, life-wide and life-deep learning.  Humanism, as a perspective in education, is based on human generation of knowledge, meaning, and ultimately expertise through interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. This self-directed learning is needs motivated, adaptive learning. I have always had an opinion that internal motivation of a student is best teacher. Role of educator is demanding; he or she has to be able to inspire student so that their inner motivation arises and grows as learning goes forward. Demanding task is also how to keep up inspiration and inner motivation as difficulties might come in learning process, whether it is because of difficult topic or lack of motivation. My opinion is that especially in education of technology motivation is essential; sometimes topics discussed are quite difficult, so motivation truly is needed for learning.

Life-long, life-wide and life-deep learning is a philosophy of learning which combines life-long learning with life-wide and life-deep learning. Life-long learning is the ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated seeking of knowledge for either personal or professional motivation. Life-long learning is determined according UNESCO to “personal, social and professional development process of a person and this process lasts through lifetime of a person”. When this learning is combined to whole life cycle and life situations of a human being, life-long learning is widened to life-wide learning. So human life as a whole is considered as a kind of learning process. When life-deep learning is added to this, learning can be understood as part of human life with all its multilayered development and changes. My opinion is that learning nowadays is part of modern human being; once you have learned something it has to be updated frequently in a world developing and going on fast.

I have only recently start to understand myself that the way I like to learn things might be also good basis to think how I could be better teacher. Especially after executing course of “University pedagogics” (25 ECTS) between Spetember 2013 and August 2014, I started to pay a lot attention to my way of teaching and also how my teaching affects learning of students. I have noticed the fact that as I have been educating more and more, I really should also think my way of educating. This is where own experiences as student is good basis. In future, I aim to study more about pedagogics and philosophies of education in Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) between August 2014 and December 2015 as I will be graduating in December 2015 as vocational teacher (B.Sc.) (60 ECTS).
